Quality is integral with manufacturing and process control equipment is being installed ever closer to the point of production. The CMM being utilized as a production gage has become commonplace in many plants that have recognized the negatives associated with traditional gaging techniques.

The traditional CMM however with its sensitive air bearings, unprotected guideways and exposed architecture was never designed for the production floor. Enclosing the conventional CMM in a protected enclosure adds expense to overcome a shop application for which the CMM is not ideally suited. However the advantages of using CMM technology as a gage are enormous.
